The main concern, which resulted in our early departure, late at night, on July 13, 2024, was that we discovered a bedbug, along with several eggs, in my daughter’s bed. I took a clear photo of the insect and eggs on my phone and consulted the California Department of Health website to confirm that it was a bedbug infestation, and to get information about how we should proceed. Shortly after discovering the problem,I brought this photo to on-site staff to let them know that we had a bedbug problem in our room, and to seek assistance in leaving our room without penalty. At the very least, I felt that we should receive reimbursement for the payment we had made for our last night in the motel, to enable us to seek accommodation elsewhere. When I presented the front desk staff with clear evidence of a serious problem in our room, they moved almost immediately to dismiss my concerns, deny evidence of a problem. When I persisted in seeking a meaningful response to my concerns, they responded with comments that questioned my own credibility and character, insulting me in front of my daughter as we scrambled to pack our things and find lodging for the night on short notice. Initially, the front desk staff told me that there was nothing that they could do, and that Housekeeping would conduct their own investigation in the morning, after we checked out. Then, they added that my picture might be fake, for all they knew. They also told me that there would be no way for me to prove that it was taken in their hotel. When I asked if someone could come with me to our room right now, the staff responded as if I had made an outlandish and entirely unreasonable request. Following this conversation, I returned to my room and recorded a video that clearly depicts the decor of our room, before zooming in on the bedbug & eggs. However, when I tried to show this video to the onsite staff member at the frontdesk, she responded by saying that she could not touch my phone, because if she were to do so, I might make up a story and accuse her of breaking my phone. It was baffling to find myself in a situation that felt a bit like schoolyard bullying, when talking to the people that were ostensibly meant to be responsible for the health and well-being of motel guests. I have traveled a lot, and seen a lot of problems and bad behavior in various settings, but I have not been treated like this since I graduated from junior high school.
