We drove in around 8:30 on the evening of November 19th. I had my first doubts when I noticed two cockroaches crawling across the countertop where I had just signed the paperwork and received the room key. When we moved into our room we found another cockroach in the toilet paper. Before settling into bed that evening I happened to notice a black splotchy pattern running across the length of the bed underneath the bedskirt. At the time I didn't realize what that indicated, but now I know that all those black dots are bed bug frass. That evening none of us slept well. I kept brushing off what I thought were stray hairs from my forehead and face (this is unusual and rather than stray hairs, I am now reasonably certain they were bed bugs). I was eager for the morning so that I could get up and take a shower. When morning finally arrived we found an actual bed bug in the sheets. Finding an actual specimen suggests that the bed bug population is very large, and we were both very disturbed and discouraged to see it. Without thinking I threw it out the door, but now I wish I had kept it for evidence. When I tried to take a shower, the knob to turn the water on would only turn and turn without letting out any water, so I couldn't even take a shower. As we checked out my partner told the man working the desk that the shower didn't work and that there were bed bugs. He seemed surprised to learn that the shower didn't work. About the bed bugs, he told us that someone treats the rooms every week. If this is even true, then either the company treating the hotel is doing a horrible job, or the infestation is so terrible that the treatments are wholly ineffective. We left the hotel that morning as soon as we could. The bites that developed over the next few days were numerous, encompassing our faces, hands, arms, necks, and backs. They were so bad on my partner that she had to get a prescription steroid to treat them. Aside from the physical difficulties of having inflamed, extremely itchy bites, we are tormented with the possibility that we introduced bed bugs to our families' homes and to our own home. We have done what we could with our clothes and luggage in an attempt to forego that possibility, but we all know that bed bugs are extremely tenacious and we worry that, in spite of our best efforts, we will discover our own infestation in the next several months.
