My partner and I went to The Beekman for a stay on March 17, 2018. We had a positive experience going into the evening -- beautiful decor and quality service. It's hard not to be impressed by the well-appointed rooms. This all changed on the Sunday morning following our 1-night stay. As we left the hotel to venture out into the day, I developed uncontrollable itching. My partner and I stopped to inspect my skin and we discovered welts all over my arms. I went to the bathroom and discovered them on my thighs, sides, and lower body. These were undoubtedly pest-related bites, but we were initially bewildered by what could possibly have been the source. My partner informed the staff upon our departure and we was told that the room would be taken out of rotation. We wanted to ensure that a guest staying there didn't go through the same thing. As I realized these bed bug bites, I took the day off work the following day, upon returning back to my city, to quarantine my belongings and get an estimate from my condo's pest control company to bring dogs into my space to ensure I didn't track anything back. I called the hotel because they had yet to communicate to us the concrete actions they were taking to ensure this will not happen to future guests or to identify what I was exposed to in their suite. I informed them of the steps I was taking on my end. I was told by the Director of Housekeeping that their trusted pest control company would be there on Tuesday to inspect - the soonest available time -and she would share results via email. She was "sorry they had not communicated that to me sooner." The email was sent to the wrong email address, I called the hotel back. Via phone, the Director asserted the results from their visual inspection came back were negative and corrected my email address to forward me the results. I submitted photos of my bites to the hotel of the bites to show what happened under their roof, and I requested the report so that I can call the company and understand the parameters of their techniques, as my trust in the hotel was compromised the moment they didn't take immediate action and communicate it to us. At no time over the course of these conversations did The Beekman offer an level of customer service besides coldly reporting visual inspection test results that are known - as a simple Google search will show you - to not be ironclad. Since this was an isolated incident and at no other point was my skin exposed during the weekend, it's hard to understand how the hotel could not take some form of responsibility for these bites that likely came from 1) the bed or 2) the hotel robe. The pest control company used for the inspection was RJS. I have spoken with RJS the accuracy of visual inspection results and they were unable to provide precise % accuracy, as it's clear they have a client relationship to maintain. They told me that a canine inspection would require more money, but it was up to their client to request that inspection. This is a health and safety issue. The Beekman and RJS can lean on the visual inspection results all they want, but it's clear to me that they are simply taking a CYA policy here. I hope future guests understand that they're taking on a risk by sleeping in these rooms and felt it was important to share my story here.
