My family and I stayed in the room 205 at the Monterey Fairgrounds Inn from 10/6/17-10/7/17 and I was originally planning to stay through 10/8/17. However, I discovered a serious infestation of bed bugs in the room 205 the night we checked in, 10/6/17. I woke up at 1:00am feeling the bites on my body and found the bed bugs in both beds. I collected as many as I was able to see with a flashlight and the hotel room plastic key. There were young as well as the adult bugs. I captured the collection process on my phone camera on video and photos. I was not able to check out right away since I was told the front office would open at 7:00am. I went to the front desk at 6:00am, I couldn't wait any longer and showed the photos and videos to the front desk assistant,. He was not cooperative and suggested that I might have planted the bugs in the room. I asked for a full refund. He said he would have to obtain the manager's approval at 11:00am. I informed him that I would be vacating the room by 7:00am and discontinue my stay for one extra night. I returned around 10:20am, he told me to wait till 11:00am for the manager to call in. In the meantime, I asked for a copy of the business license certificate for the hotel, he refused to provide it. He said I did not need the license # to file a complaint, the mailing address was sufficient to initiate an official complaint. At 11:00am he spoke to the manager, who instructed him to refund 50% of the total charge. I demanded a full amount since I was ready to vacate at 1:00am and was forced to wait for the manager's approval at 11:00am the next morning. Had I known this hotel was a breeding ground for these parasites, I would not have booked a room to begin with. He refused and blamed that I had planted the bugs in the room. I repeatedly asked for the business license copy, he did not comply. I left the hotel and informed him of my intent to file an official complaint about this serious infestation and public health hazard. I would like to make sure the hotel takes appropriate measures to address the infestation or future customers are aware of this hotel's unsafe and irresponsible business practice. The room 205 (I suspect the entire hotel) is a disaster and disgrace to the Monterey community.
