Management sent out a notice that there was a bedbug infestation but the tenant was responsible for the cost of treatment. About a month later, the residents of my apartment started waking up with bites. We inspected the apartment and found bedbugs in various stages of lifecycle. I spoke to the manager and also sent a written notice. I was told that it was my responsibility to treat the problem immediately to keep the infestation from spreading. I was also told that I had brought the bedbugs in since no other unit had reported a problem. Over the past few weeks, I had noticed multiple discarded mattresses and other pieces of furniture next to the complex's dumpsters. Now that I was aware of the problem, paid closer attention to these items. They all had signs of infestation and some even had bedbugs crawling on them. I spoke to several neighbors and many reported that they too had reported an infestation or spoken to some else in the complex who had. I spoke to the manager again and told her I could not afford a professional to come treat the apartment (it was 3 times my rent).That I did not think it should be my responsibility to do so, since I didn't (and still don't) believe it was my fault. She told me I didn't need to hire a professional, they did their own treatments. She said it was important to treat this quickly and that the maintencance guy would be going in to spray my unit and the adjoining units the next day. The cost for this would be added to the next months rent. One month later and I am still waking up with new bites.
