On Monday December 9, 2019 I checked into the Clarion Inn for business travel for two days in the Auburn area. Upon entering my room I noticed a tidy but distressed room. After dinner and a shower (hot water but tub wouldn't drain) I sat on the edge of the bed to respond to emails (without laying down) and noticed bugs crawling up the side of my mattress over the edge and towards me. They were different sizes and distinctively identifiable as bed bugs. The largest was around 1/2 cm in length and appeared unfed with a more ovoid flattened abdomen. Small nymphs about the size of a pin head were present and crawling also. I captured the bugs to take to the front desk. I also examined the bedding and the sheets, the corners and underside of the mattress and the box spring. I didn't get very far because the evidence of moving insects and dried black speckling of feces was overwhelming! I also saw the shed skins and the small clear egg cases. My reading glasses and the flashlight of my phone allowed me to see so in depth. I was mortified and shocked by the number of insects and how active they were with the lamp on! I was so thankful that I hadn't gone to sleep!! I went to the front desk (with the bugs I collected in a cup using a sheet of paper to scoop them off the sheets) and asked to be moved to another room. In the new room there I found no evidence of crawling insects, however there was evidence of a previous infestation as there was the distinctive speckling on the edge of the mattress protector. I left the hotel.
